A Day In My (Boring) Life

Elisa at Concateknit is having a contest. She asked to see people's days. My days are quite boring as I'm unemployed but here goes the other day. 'A' (my son) was overnight at a friend's so I woke up earlier than I needed to but I couldn't get back to sleep. I made myself some oatmeal porridge as I ate too much wheat the day before and my stomach wanted something soothing.

Seeing that 'A' wasn't on the computer I got in my time in the morning. Not having anything to download podcasts onto I have to listen straight from the computer and so I try to find things to do near the computer. I listened to an episode of The Knitting Cook. I usually do paper work during podcasts and one of the things I did today was to look for my recipe for Finnish shrove buns as it wasn't in the proper plastic pocket. (See an example of Shrove buns here but you have to scroll down.)
Another thing I did during the podcast was to find the leak in my back tire. I don't have a car so I use my bike year round (even when it was -25 C (- 13 F)) so it is important that it works. I got my son's tire ready to fix too but it has a weird valve and I didn't know how to pump air into it so I left it waiting.

I had fun (I'm being sarcastic) looking for the Isabeau Purse I started because I had no idea where it was. It was no help that I remembered that it was in a different bag than it was and so it took me longer to find it.

I did some housework including cleaning the grease spots off of the burners on the stove.

And some cooking. Here are the shrove buns waiting to be filled with raspberry jam and whipped cream.

I lead such a boring life, don't I?

Will This Ever Finish?

I can't believe that I had to undo the top of the hat again (from the white lifeline). I only had the last stitches on the needles, ready to sew the thread through, but we decided that it was still too short. A had asked if it was ready so he could wear it, but I had wanted him to try it on, just to be sure, before finishing it off. Well at least if I make him another one I probably won't have to undo any of it. I wish I had thought of a top down hat before starting this.

HAPPY VALENTINE'S DAY

This is the Valentine's card I made for my son. It will have a heart-shaped lollypop through the two raised kite ties.

After having more problems with A's hat's decreases I had him try it on and we agreed that it was going to be too short. So I undid all of the rows back until before I started the decreases! Someday this will be done.

Watermelon Coaster

It's been so cold so we've been drinking hot drinks and A asked if we had any coasters so he could put his mug on his desk. We didn't have any so I thought that I'd make him one. I was going to make a heart shaped one for Valentine's day but, at 16, I didn't know if he'd like a heart hanging around his desk. OK another reason was because I had already crocheted a heart this month and 'been there, done that'. I saw a watermelon coaster that I liked and made one. I had to make my own pattern because the one that I tried didn't work with the acrylic (or whatever it is) yarn I was using, it just made ripples around the edge.

I'm hoping to finish A's hat today or tomorrow. I've not had fun with the decreases. I don't know how many times I've had to undo something. It was funny that Brenda Dayne of the Cast On podcast mentioned that Tracy Ullman hadn't learnt how to do 'SSK' decrease until she was 43 (I think that was the age) and I only heard about it last week when I started to do the decreases on this hat.

Back to Knitting

I had planned to make A this hat for Christmas but only got as far as the red lifeline. I realized that I should check it on his head before continuing but I have only now felt like doing any knitting. It shouldn't take too long because he wants me to start the shaping already. I hope it won't turn out too short.
